2025 Ford Ranger Engine Comparison

Multiply your workday or weekend potential with the rugged EcoBoost® engine options offered with the 2025 Ford Ranger. The XL, XLT, and Lariat® trims all feature the 2.3L EcoBoost inline four-cylinder (I4) engine as standard equipment with an athletic 270 horsepower. You can upgrade to the 315-horsepower 2.7L EcoBoost V6 on the XLT and Lariat trims if you prefer enhanced performance and 400 pound-feet of torque. For ultimate Ranger muscle, go for the Raptor® trim. It’s exclusively equipped with the 405-horsepower 3.0L EcoBoost V6 engine that’s built for a wide range of off-road adventures.

The standard 2.3L EcoBoost engine offers the highest fuel economy estimates, with up to 19 MPG in the city and 26 MPG on the highway. City fuel economy is the same, but highway fuel economy drops to 23 MPG with the 2.7L EcoBoost engine. The brawny 3.0L EcoBoost engine achieves 16 MPG in city driving and 18 MPG on the highway. All three engines feature a stop-start system to help maximize efficiency when you are at a standstill.

2025 Ford Ranger Drivetrain

Sure-footed handling is a key part of every truck. To this end, the 2025 Ford Ranger offers two different 4x4 drivetrain options, along with a standard 4x2 drivetrain. To customize the traction and drivetrain performance over a wide range of conditions, standard selectable drive modes include normal, sport, slippery, eco, and tow/haul. In the always-ready Raptor trim, off-road, Baja, and rock crawl add to the list of customizable terrain settings. Meanwhile, you can get a boost to off-road capability with the optional FX4® Package with unique mud/ruts and sand drive modes on the XLT and Lariat trims.

2025 Ranger drivetrain options include:

  • 4x2 — A 4x2 drivetrain that drives the rear wheels only is standard on the Ranger XL, XLT, and Lariat trims. It includes an open front differential and a 3.73 open-style rear differential, though an electronic-locking rear axle is offered as an upgrade for those who anticipate slick conditions.
  • 4x4 — For traditional truck capability and confidence over snow-covered roads or tough trails, the Ranger XL, XLT, and Lariat trims all offer a part-time 4x4 system. The electronic shift-on-the-fly transfer case offers both 4H and 4L modes. Like the 4x2 system, this 4x4 system also features an open front and rear differential, with the option to upgrade to an electronic-locking rear differential.
  • Raptor 4x4 — This rugged, off-road-ready 4x4 system has a two-speed transfer case with 4H, 4L, and 4A. It’s paired with electronic-locking front and rear axles for additional “power through it” capability when the trail turns to mud. Further enhancing the Raptor capability, you get 2.5-inch FOX™ racing shocks with Live Valve™ technology and a Watts-link rear suspension.
