What is Ford SYNC?

SYNC is the connectivity interface built into today’s Ford cars, trucks, and SUVs. Via the center display, SYNC allows you to interact hands-free with a wide range of infotainment and communication features, including music, navigation, incoming messages, and calls from your Bluetooth®-paired phone.

The first version of SYNC was created in partnership with Microsoft and offered and built into select 2008 model year Ford vehicles that were available for sale in 2007. Since then, innovations and enhancements have built on the initial legacy of hands-free convenience. Today, the latest versions of Ford SYNC technology — SYNC 4 and SYNC 4A — provide wireless connectivity for your compatible smartphone, voice command capabilities, and include over-the-air software update capabilities.

How to Use Ford SYNC

To maximize the utility of the Ford SYNC system, you’ll want to pair a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone and enjoy familiar apps and hands-free phone capabilities. To get started, pair your phone. Then, use voice commands to interact with your phone call and messaging functions, and enjoy phone mirroring via Apple CarPlay® or Android Auto™. Once your phone is paired, simply press the voice button on the steering wheel and tell SYNC what you need it to do.

For models with the SYNC 4 or SYNC 4A system, the steps to pair your phone are:

  • Start by ensuring that Bluetooth on your phone is enabled.
  • Open the “Settings” menu on the SYNC touchscreen.
  • Select “Add a phone”.
  • Follow the on-screen prompts to finish setup.
  • Confirm that the passcode that pops up on both your phone and the SYNC touchscreen match.
  • Select the option to pair your phone.
  • Phone contacts will automatically download into the SYNC system.

For older models dating back to the 2016 model year using SYNC 3 technology with a touchscreen, the steps to pair your phone are:

  • Start by ensuring that Bluetooth on your phone is enabled.
  • Select “Phone” on the SYNC touchscreen.
  • Select “Add Bluetooth Device” and pick your phone from the list.
  • Push the “SYNC” button.
  • Once the six-digit PIN appears, confirm the numbers on your phone and the SYNC touchscreen align.
  • Follow any additional prompts to complete the SYNC process.
  • Phone contacts can be accessed through the “Contacts” menu, and entire phonebooks from a connected device can be downloaded via the “Manage Contacts” menu.

Benefits of Ford SYNC
