Classic Ford Bronco to Now

Since its arrival in 1965, the Ford Bronco has made a lasting impression on American drivers. The classic Ford Bronco was right at home in the great outdoors and offered the freedom many Joliet-area drivers crave. The early Ford Bronco certainly made a name for itself that’s never disappeared. And now, the new Ford Bronco carries the torch with an athletic style, sharp handling, and uncompromising power on and off the beaten path.

Classic Ford Bronco: First Generation (1965–1977)

Here are some quick facts about the first-generation Bronco:

  • The classic Ford Bronco sported a unique chassis and was an off-road vehicle that also accommodated passengers.
  • Nowadays, it would fall into the compact SUV class with its 92-inch wheelbase. For-wheel drive was standard.
  • The early Ford Bronco's inline-6 engine was derived from the Ford Falcon and generated 105 hp.
  • The Ford Bronco was a straightforward, no-nonsense vehicle that stood out because it wasn't flashy; it was rugged and off-road-ready.

Later Ford Bronco Models

Second Generation (1978-1980)

This model kept many of the first generation's styling accents, but made the following changes:

  • Original Bronco chassis was retired
  • Wheelbase was extended by 12 inches
  • Offered only as a three-door wagon

Third Generation (1980-1986)

The third-generation Bronco was smaller and lighter than the second, but otherwise, was very similar. It would maintain its full-size classification, and it continued to be based on a chassis derived from the famed F-Series.

Ford Bronco II (1983-1990)

Ford unveiled the Bronco II three years after releasing the third-generation model. This model ushered in a new chapter in the Bronco's history as a compact SUV. Even so, it was more similar to the first-generation Bronco than the third-generation and was developed alongside the 1983 Ford Ranger. Eventually, the Bronco II was replaced by the Ford Explorer.

Fourth Generation (1987-1991)

The fourth- and third-generation Bronco shared the same chassis, but the fourth-gen model received more interior and exterior upgrades. This generation also included a Silver Anniversary Edition, which was the first Ford Bronco to offer leather seating.

Fifth Generation (1992-1996)

Although distinctive, the fifth-generation Bronco didn't include many changes, aside from interior upgrades and safety features. Also, this generation did away with the removable hard-top.

Sixth Generation (2021 - )

The sixth-generation Ford Bronco was revived as a midsize SUV with classic body-on-frame construction, an independent suspension system, and a 2.3L turbo EcoBoost® inline-four engine. It also features a detachable roof — much like the classic Bronco. The side doors can also be removed for a open-air experience on the trails.
