What is AWD?

AWD, or “all-wheel drive,” drivetrains are configured to deliver torque (rotational energy) from the engine to the front and rear axles, and subsequently to all four wheels, via differentials that allow the wheels to rotate at different speeds. Modern AWD systems can deliver power independently to each wheel via electronic control systems that detect when a wheel is losing or gaining traction. A prime example of an AWD vehicle from the Ford lineup is the 2022 Ford Explorer.

What is 4WD?

4WD or “four-wheel drive” is another name for a traditional 4x4 drivetrain, which has been in popular use since the late 1930’s. The key benefit to a 4WD system is the mechanics that allow for independently delivered power, this way when one wheel begins to slip, it doesn’t affect the rotation delivered to another wheel. This system can also be “locked” to ensure that both wheels spin at the same speed, regardless of traction or the vehicle being mid-turn. These 4x4 systems are best used for off road purposes, for everything from mud pits to rock-crawling. A great example of a vehicle with a 4WD drivetrain option is the 2022 Ford F-150.
